Italy Launches USR Program to Combat Gambling Addiction

Italian CasinosAAMS (Agenzia delle dogane e dei Monopoli) which is the gambling regulator in Italy has decided to start a new program in order to tackle the gambling addiction in the country. It has recently launched a national exclusion program that will allow people to exclude themselves from licensed casino operator in the country.

This new self-exclusion system is known as USR and it is very easy to operate. All one has to do is to fill an online application form and submit it through AAMS or any legal gambling operator in Italy. After receiving the application, the player will be prohibited from gambling at any of the legally operated online Italian casino sites.

Early, the player concerned has to sign up themselves in order to be on the exclusion list but it would be limited to the casino operators that have signed up with. It means that they were free to access other EU-regulated online casino sites that where they are not on the exclusion list.

With this new exclusion program, the players’ account will be closed with immediate effect and the request is being sent to a centralized registry from where other casino operators are informed about the players’ exclusion list.

Players have the option to choose between a permanent exclusion or six-months hiatus based on their preference. In the recent times, Italy has seen a stringent rise in the number of addicted gamblers and the figure is rising with every passing year.

Research Shows Steep Rise in Addicted Gamblers

According to a report, 56,000 online Italian players have applied to get themselves banned from casino sites in the year 2017. This is 6% rise in a number of people from its earlier year. This figure is identical to 3% of the total number of online gamblers in Italy.

The USR exclusion program came after new data was revealed lately. A recent research at annual Online Gambling Observatory has given more insight on the average number of gamblers in the country.

Two researchers named Marco Planzi and Samuele Fraternali did a paper on Italian gambling and gambler last year. According to their research, the average Italian gambler is a male in the age group of 24-44 years and resides in the Southern and Central region of Italy.

25% of these Italian gamblers place an average of 1 bet every month where the average wager has reached up to 120 Euros which is a big amount. In 2017, the online gamblers in Italy have deposited a whopping sum of 3 billion Euros in their accounts and withdrawals to the tune of 1.85 billion Euros which is a sizeable amount.

The self-exclusion problem is hoped to curb the gambling addiction in the country and people are expected to get rid of their addiction problems.
