Opening of MGM Cotai Casino Delayed for Indefinite Time

MGM Cotai CasinoThe $3.45 billion MGM Cotai Casino which was assumed to open for the public has been delayed for an indefinite time.

It was speculated that this multi-billion casino resort would have been made available to people before the start of the Chinese New Year but it would be delayed much further than that.

The main reason behind the delay is Macau Government Tourism Office or MGTO.

All the hotel operations in the city are run and operated by MGTO and the overall area where MGM Cotai is located is a huge area. The Macau Government Tourism Office is not showing any interest towards the opening of the casino and it is evading the questions of the reporters and other media people.

The tourism bureau made the following statement:

MGTO informs that there is no update at this moment to provide. The license application for the opening of the five-star hotel MGM Cotai and establishments inside the property still waits for favourable opinions from related technical departments.

This is very unfortunate news for the casino enthusiasts. According to the official website of MGTO, hotel operation approval requires permission from several government departments. The departments include power, water supply and fire safety. The casino was slated to open on February 13, 2018, but it seems there would not be any issuance of the license.

Reporters tried to contact the officials of MGM Cotai regarding room reservation for the upcoming Chinese New Year on February 15, 2018. The administration has reported that all the rooms are fully booked for the occasion. But they have also responded that they are not sure about the opening of the casino for February 13.

The statement is supported by the comment made by MGTO Director, Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes who said that she could not guarantee that the casino would be open for public on Chinese New Year. When the reports asked for the delay, the Director responded that they are waiting for the approval and response from different government departments.

This is not the first time that the opening of MGM Cotai has been delayed. The casino was originally slated to open back in 2016 but it has never seen the daylight till now. It was confirmed to open in the middle of 2017 which was postponed to end of that year. In the last announcement, it was confirmed that the casino would open in January 2018 but it is heartening to note that casino remained shut down and has dissatisfied all the people.

This unfortunate delay is making the speculation that MGM Cotai might have troubles in generating revenue. It is saddening to note that the casino has fewer gaming tables as compared to its rivals. With the casino missing its opening in the Chinese New Year, the earnings would be seriously affected.
