NZ Minister to Stop Online Casinos from Adverts on TV

New Zealand CasinosThe Internal Affairs Minister of New Zealand, Tracey Martin, wants to overhaul the existing the gambling laws of the country by stopping the online casino advertisements on the television.

This response came from the minister after an investigation carried out by the online magazine called “The Spinoff”. As per the report, an online casino called JacpotCity based in Malta has been advertising its casino site on the Kiwi television.

According to the investigation, the advertisement is a subtle and cunning way of convincing the innocent people to visit the casino site and gamble online.

But there are no laws in New Zealand at the moment that can stop any casino site from displaying its ads on the television.

It was proved back in October 2017 when a Kiwi resident complained about JackpotCity to New Zealand Advertising Standards Authority for promoting real money gambling on the television. But as per the watchdog of the country, there were no grounds for the complaint, and finally, it led to its dismissal.

It is where the Internal Affairs minister step in where she as urged the government for putting in proper legislation for banning gambling ads on television. It is interesting to note that gambling legislation in New Zealand is same since 2003 and Tracey Martin believes it is the time to make some amends in the gambling laws.

Spirit of Casino Game Law Violated

The Internal Affairs Minister acknowledged that both the casino site JackpotCity and owner of the television channel MediaWorks are technically clear when it comes to gambling laws in the country. But she had written a letter to the television channel about breaking the spirit of the law by displaying casino adverts on TV.

Tracey Martin made the following statement:

So the New Zealand public has to come with us on this, we can't just be the big stick, the public has to say, ‘we agree, this is inappropriate, and we're going to start writing multitudes of letters to the CEO.

It is not the online casino sites that the Internet Affairs Minister of New Zealand has targeted. She has even targeted the Totalisator Agency Board or TAB for being aggressive about incentives and betting offers in the emails. TAB has a significant influence on sports betting in the country and the aggressive marketing strategy on their part could be a part of gambling advertisement. She is hopeful to bring up the matter in front of the Cabinet in coming weeks.
