New Survey Reports Show Chinese VIP Gamblers are Exuberant Spenders

MacauThe favourite brokerage firm Sanford C. Bernstein has published a report which delves deeper into the spending habits of gamblers hailing from Mainland China at the casinos in Macau.

Five analysts from this brokerage firm had taken a survey about the premium mass gamblers of Macau and published their findings in a special report by the name “2017 Bernstein China Premium Consumer Usage and Attitudes Survey”.

According to the survey, all the gaming spends in Macau are classified as premium as premium mass is considered different market segment. The study shows that an average Chinese gambler pays to the tune of CNY 20,000 on a single visit. During the next five years, it is likely that the premium market would grow by 28% compound annual growth rate (CAGR).

The survey also pointed out that 61% of Mainland China gamblers are male and the most critical factor while choosing a Macau casino was “functionality”. For the average Chinese player, their choice of the casino was based on several factors like nongaming activities, hotel accommodation, and overall casino environment.

The analysts from Sanford C. Bernstein made the following statement:

Premium customers remain critical for long-term Macau growth, as wealthier customers spend more and visit more frequently: and the population of this demographic is increasing. Over the next 10 years, Macau is estimated to have 6.4 percent CAGR in GGR, with VIP CAGR of 4.8 percent and mass CAGR of nearly 8 percent. The key driver of mass will be premiumisation overnight visitors, staying longer and spending more.

The survey highlighted that properties of Sands China were the most visited amongst all the casinos in Macau. It did not come as any surprise that Sands China has a dominant hotel room presence in Macau along with the critical mass. Melco Resorts and Wynn Macau Ltd are two other casino operators that had the most frequented visitors whereas casino properties that operate under SJM Holdings license attracted older customers.

The survey report also found that although there is an increase in visitors at Macau from Mainland China over the past few years, the casinos in Macau continued having low penetration in Mainland China. Till date, the casinos in Macau have reached around 5% of their potential market which is defined based on the reasonable income of an individual.

The casinos in Macau have always relied on its VIP segment that had once generated more than 50% of GCR. After the anti-corruption crackdown was launched in 2014 by Beijing, the casino operators in Macau have focused on other segments of the market to make up for the decline in VIP gaming revenue.
