Gonzita’s Quest Slot Overview

Did someone say female Gonzo? Well, Red Tiger Gaming decided to revive a casino classic in a big way, this time centred around a female protagonist.

If you’re an online gambling enthusiast, then you’ve probably played NetEnt’s original Gonzo’s Quest from 2011, which followed the adventures of Spanish conquistador Gonzo, in the lost city of El Dorado.

That game became an instant classic, and within 10 years, we already had two sequels: Red Tiger Gaming’s Gonzo’s Quest Megaways™ (2020), and NetEnt and Evolution Gaming collaborated on Gonzo’s Treasure Hunt Live (2021).

Now, Red Tiger Gaming (a NetEnt sister brand that is also owned by Evolution Gaming) is back with a pretty major development…

Gonzita’s Quest is fronted by a lady, who we can presume is Gonzo’s better half, sister, or female reinterpretation – we’re not sure, but either way, we’re excited to meet her!

In fact, this game, which will be out on 4 October 2022, is set to be a fantastic sequel that takes us back to the fictional golden city in the South-American continent, where you can start digging for treasures and precious metals over a classic structure of five reels, three rows, and 20 fixed paylines.

This already builds nostalgia and anticipation for former fans since the layout is identical to the original. But we’re also seeing a similar RTP score of 95.66%, as well as a great assortment of bonus features to rave about, such as cascading reels and free spins with bet multipliers.

So, are you ready for a brand-new Spanish expedition? Let’s scoop up all the gold and start our Gonzita’s Quest slot review!

Gonzita’s Quest Features

Any sequel worth a spin must usually either improve the graphics and features of the original game or come up with something entirely different, starting from a similar theme or context.

With Gonzita’s Quest, we instantly noticed the comeback of the avalanche reels mechanic, which made Gonzo’s Quest so memorable in the first place.

However, a stark difference is that the increasing win multipliers accompanying the free spins in the original game have been replaced by random bet multipliers. There is also a symbol collection and upgrade mechanism present during free spins, which we’ll detail below.

Another important differentiator is that Gonzita’s Quest doesn’t feature any type of Wild symbol. This is a far cry from Gonzo’s Quest, where Wild substitutions played a massive role in unlocking the bonus round.

Lastly, for players outside the United Kingdom, Gonzita’s Quest slot also comes with two additional spinning modes, namely Turbo Mode (makes the reels spin faster) and Autoplay (allows up to 100 automatic spins).

Avalanche Mechanic

The avalanche or chain reaction mechanic is active during the base game and free spins. It is worth noting that both NetEnt and Red Tiger Gaming opted to brand the mechanic this way, whilst other developers call it tumbling reels, win reactions, or cascading reels.

Once you trigger a winning combination, avalanches come into play. They remove the paying symbols from the reels with a mighty explosion and allow new ones to fall from above, potentially leading to consecutive wins. Avalanches will stop once no more winning combinations occur.

Because it follows the classic layout of an online slot, in order to trigger a winning combination, you must land three, four, or five matching symbols on an active payline, starting from reel 1.

Free Spins

To start the Free Spins feature, you need to land at least three Scatter symbols anywhere in view. The Scatter is a stone slab marked with a random bet multiplier (e.g. 1x, 10x, 50x), and these can fall at the start of any new spinning sequence or between cascades.

Once you’ve matched three or more Scatter symbols, they will remain locked in place while the Free Spins feature commences. Meanwhile, the game will remove the third reel to make room for Gonzita, allowing her to take a seat on a golden throne.

At the start of the round, you’ll receive three free spins, during which two types of special symbols can fall:

  • Stone slabs with bet multipliers, which reset the free spins counter to three (yes, reset it to three, not add free spins) and stick to the reels for the duration of the free spins.
  • Blank stone slabs without bet multipliers, which are removed by the end of the spin.

If you manage to fill an entire reel with three sticky stone slab symbols, Gonzita will collect them all on the centre reel, and new symbols will fall in their place. The slab symbols can also automatically upgrade twice:

  • Stone slabs, which have 1x, 2x, 5x, or 7x bet multipliers.
  • Golden slabs, which have 10x, 25x, 50x, or 75x bet multipliers.
  • Diamond slabs, which have 100x, 250x, 500x, or 750x bet multipliers.

The bonus game will only end if you’ve run out of free spins or if you’ve managed to land diamond slabs on all four reels.

Either way, once this bonus feature is completed, Gonzita will get off the throne and dance the macarena as your stake-per-spin is multiplied by the number of multipliers you managed to get during the whole duration of the free spins.

Gonzita’s Quest RTP & Volatility

Gonzita’s Quest has an estimated RTP (Return-To-Player) rate of 95.66%, which is well within the average for most video slots.

It also has a medium/high variance level, favouring the accumulation of medium and large-size wins with a decent frequency.

The maximum win is capped at 2,580x your stake or between 258 and 103,200, depending on your stake size. Unfortunately, this top payout is somewhat disappointing, since most video slots typically offer ranges of 5,000x-50,000x.

Symbols & Paytable

The special symbols revealed on the reels match the theme superbly, as they depict various Incan masks that represent the ancient Gods. The Incas were South American Natives who ruled an empire at the time of the Spanish conquest, and are known for their majestic temples and their worship of nature gods.

Red Tiger Gaming left no detail to chance when rendering the images of these Gods across a stone temple wall.

Indeed, there are no card suit symbols, with the low-paying symbols being the:

  • Orange Bird – pays up to 2x your bet for five of a kind
  • Red Snake – pays up to 3x your bet for five of a kind
  • Green Alligator – pays up to 5x your bet for five of a kind
  • Blue Fish – pays up to 8x your bet for five of a kind

These are followed by the Incan masks:

  • Purple Mask – pays up to 15x your bet for five of a kind
  • Golden Mask – pays up to 30x your bet for five of a kind
  • Green Mask – pays up to 50x your bet for five of a kind
  • Blue Mask – premium icon, pays up to 125x your bet for five of a kind

Finally, there is one special symbol, the Stone Slab, which has various functions:

  • In the base game, this acts as a scatter symbol, and you’ll need to land at least three of these to initiate the free spins.
In the free spins, this is the only symbol that lands on the reels, with some having multipliers. After several spins, these symbols can turn into Gold or Diamond Slabs.

This game does not have a Wild symbol.

Theme, Graphics, Soundtrack & User Experience

Looking at the similar theme, graphics, and symbol design, it’s easy to consider Gonzita’s Quest a tribute or an homage to the original Gonzo’s Quest. That is because both games are set in the dense Amazonian jungle, at the entrance of a stone temple embedded with animal carvings and ancient God symbols.

The only notable difference is Gonzita taking Gonzo’s place on the left side of the main reels.

Even so, much like Gonzo, the heroine interacts with the player by cheering, clapping, and even dancing when winning combinations ensue.

Throughout the spins, there is a rhythmic tribal soundtrack in the background, adding another layer of authenticity to our exploration.

Stakes & Betting Range

Gonzita’s Quest proposes a median betting range of 0.1 – 40, which should be enough to meet the budget requirements of most players. With a bit of a stretch, even high rollers can have some fun on this exotic journey!

Gonzita’s Quest Mobile Play

If you want to navigate the intricacies of Incan temples, even from a smaller device, have no worries. Gonzita’s Quest promises the same level of quality we can expect from an Evolution Gaming brand – based on our first look, it renders superbly on smartphones and tablets with Android/iOS.

However, due to the simple reel layout, we advise playing in landscape mode.

Because it uses HTML5/Java Script technologies, no additional software downloads are necessary.

Gonzita’s Quest – Pros & Cons

Eager for a new exploration into the Amazonian jungle with Gonzo’s female counterpart? If you’re lucky enough to find it, here’s what to expect from the mystical golden city:

Pros

  • Free spins with upgrading symbols
  • Bet multipliers
  • Cascading reels in the base game

Cons

  • Low maximum win
  • Few bonus features
  • No Wild substitutions

Gonzo’s Quest vs Gonzita’s Quest – Which Is Better?

Deciding which of the two games is better comes down to personal preference. Both slots tackle the exploratory theme and are set in ancient Incan cities, hidden in the midst of the rich jungle.

One is female-centric, whilst the other has a male hero driving the action and narrative; however, the player objective remains the same: find the city of El Dorado, retrieve the gold and precious stones, and return home.

In terms of payout, Gonzita’s Quest offers a slightly higher maximum win. On the opposite end, Gonzo’s Quest has a higher betting range. Lastly, there are no meaningful differences when it comes to volatility, RTP, and layout .

And if you want to skip the long-winded explanations, we’ve also outlined the key similarities and differences between Gonzo’s Quest and Gonzita’s Quest in our table below:

Gonzita’s Quest:

95.66% 5×3 20 Avalanche Mechanic, Free Spins, Bet Multipliers, Upgrading Symbols 2,580x 0.1 – 40 Medium/High Spanish Expedition, Golden City of El Dorado 2022

Gonzo’s Quest:

RTP Reel Layout Paylines Bonus Features Top Payout Betting Range Volatility Theme Release Year
95.97% 5×3 20 Avalanche Reels, Increasing Win Multiplier, Wild Substitutions, Free Spins 2,500x £0.2 -£50 Medium/High Spanish, Expedition, Golden City of El Dorado 2011

Our Gonzita’s Quest Slot Verdict

Gonzita’s Quest is certainly a respectable tribute to Gonzo’s Quest, a true classic of the ancient civilisations and expeditions theme.

The differences between the two games are subtle: with Gonzita’s Quest, there is a lack of Wild substitutions, compensated by the introduction of upgrading symbols and the slight uptick in the top payout (2,580x compared to Gonzo’s 2,500x). Furthermore, the free spins round plays like a Hold & Win bonus game, which is another refreshing change.

Gonzita’s bubbly personality and enthusiastic cheers are also welcome, serving to spice up our gameplay with some humour – it appears that she shares her brother’s (or husband’s?) less-than-serious demeanour.

Our verdict? If you’re a fan of history and exploration, Gonzita’s Quest will be right up your alley. Our heroine deserves an honorary spot alongside other popular female explorers like Microgaming’s Lara Croft and Play’n GO’s Cat Wilde.
